Synopsis:
To save her people, a wingless girl must learn to fly.My Rating:
As a piskey girl born without wings and raised underground, Ivy yearns for flight almost as much as she misses her long-lost mother. But the world outside the Delve is full of danger, and her dreams seem hopeless until she meets a mysterious faery who makes her an enticing offer: If Ivy helps him escape the Delve's dungeon, he'll teach her how to fly.
Freeing Richard could cost Ivy her reputation, perhaps even her life. But when her fellow piskeys start to disappear and her beloved little sister goes missing, Ivy has no choice but to take the risk.
Deadly threats and shocking revelations await Ivy as she ventures into a strange new world, uncovers long-buried secrets about her family's past, and finds that no one--not even herself--is entirely what they seem.
Let me preface this review by saying that I totally enjoyed the writing, characters and world of this book, but I did ultimately give this a 3.5 star. This is written on the lower end of the YA genre leaning almost MG which is why I couldn't give it a full 4 star rating for my own personal preference. With that said, this was still an awesome read for me. Give me a fantasy with fae and throw some faith aspects in it and I'll love it!
This was my first book from R.J. Anderson and I was thoroughly intrigued from beginning to end. The world building and descriptions made me feel like I was personally exploring the world in person. All the characters were developed pretty well enough for me. I wasn't 100% invested in them personally, but I could see my son or niece loving the characters. Ivy was the most interesting to me because I got to see many sides of her.
The pacing was well done, not too slow nor too fast. Everything flowed seamlessly. The action was thrilling and the plot twists were exciting. Overall, I was pleased to have read this book and definitely plan to read more from her.

Blessings,
Thank you so much for your review, and for saying such positive things about the story even if it seemed to skew a little younger than you prefer as a reader! The books do "grow up" as they go along, so this is the most MG-ish of the three: the other two are definitely more YA...
