My Rating
This book was surprisingly good. I went into this with very low expectation and found myself truly enjoying this story. The plot was amazing. You had the main plot surrounded around a climb gone wrong, but then you had several other mini-plots and a mysteries in between. The writing was amazing and the characters were all dynamic.

Jenny Calhoun goes on a yearly climb with her friends to let go of her own guilt and shame. Jenny is a strong character as she faced many trials and setbacks from her past job as a CIA profiler. Jenny has bogged herself down and has breakdowns after a mistake took lives of a few men. I truly enjoyed Jenny as a character that struggled, but I also wanted to constantly slap her silly. She kept doing things that put others in danger. She never meant to, but in thinking of her own issues and wants she never really focused on everyone else. With all that she went through -- death of her parents and the lives she accidentally took -- she learned to steel her emotions and put on the "I'm okay" act. Seeing her learn to break down her walls was awesome.

Orion Starr is an angry, bitter and injured man. After a job gone terribly wrong he becomes angry with the world. He seeks to find the one to blame so that he can project his anger on to them. Orion was an awesome male character. He was never too push. He may have been angry, but he did his best to never let it be seen. Like Jenny, there were times I wanted to pop him for his stupidity, but it seems like being stuck and nearly killed on a mountain helped bring him to God. Orion is a hardworking and caring man with a strong since of loyalty and devotion to those he works with. I enjoyed him.

The romance was sort of second-chance between Orion and Jenny and I loved it. They weren't took quick to flirt, but took their time getting to know one another. They talked, they laughed, they revealed themselves and didn't go over that boundary until things became desperate for them. I loved seeing them finally get to have that second chance at really trying to become a couple.

Aria and Sasha -- friends to Jenny -- were both amazing and dumb. Neither of them wanted to go climb the Denali, but they both had their own battles to fight at the same time. Each of these women were strong and finding out their stories was heartbreaking and phenomenal to the story line as a whole.

Ham and Jake -- Orion's buddies -- were both comical! Ham was the spiritual one of the bunch, but he never got too "holier than thou" on them. He knew how to share the Word without throwing it down their throats. He was such an amazing man. Jake was awesome as well. I enjoyed getting some parts of the story in his point of view. Learning about his dark past crushed me -- people in any form of military, army, navy and etc have it hard.

The secondary romance between Aria and Jake was absolutely cute. They were the more comical pairing to me. I enjoyed the pull between the two of them and hope to see them expand in the coming books.

The faith aspects were phenomenal. A lot of talk about having faith in God, letting go of anger, allowing God to work on you, forgiving self and so forth. Few scriptures mentioned, but the fact that Ham was a man of faith and both Orion and Jenny had God-fearing parents was epic. With all the sadness and heartbreaking truths revealed I think the addition of the faith talks were outright phenomenal.

That ending -- oh wow -- I didn't see that coming at all. That was a clear twist and it also blended the first chapter to the end of the novel. Totally enjoyed and can't wait to read the sequel when it comes out.

Blessings,

VOTW | Isaiah 41:10 - Ever Present Help

Good morning Gems (& Gents)! This past weekend has been insane in both a good and scary way. I experienced something frightening, but in that situation I felt a sense of peace and contentment that I'd never would have experienced before if my relationship with God wasn't where it is now. As I was thinking of a verse for this week, I came across this one from the book of Isaiah and I knew this was it: Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand. Such a small, yet powerful verse. This is a command and a promise from our Father whether we are in times of despair or in seasons of gladness. Though told this to the people of Israel, this verse is still true to His children today. Let's start off by breaking down some of the words in this verse shall we: Fear : the Hebrew word is  yare' meaning to cause to frighten ( affright ); to make or be afraid;...

DOI Book Club - Fervent by Priscilla Shirer

Good morning Gems! Today, I'll be sharing with you all one of the exciting things I'll be starting in March and it's a book club! I polled on Facebook and Instagram and had you all vote and the winner was a no-brainer! This is the first Book Club that I’ll be hosting ever and I am so excited. Fervent by Priscilla Shirer won hands down! We’re jumping into the topic of prayer and I’m a big person on reading and learning all that I can about prayer. I don’t know about you all, but my prayer life has its ups and downs. Now for those of you who don’t know, Priscilla Shirer is the actress from the movie War Room ( which I HIGHLY recommend ). She wrote a book for woman based off of the movie. Here’s bit of what to expect from this phenomenal book: “You have an enemy . . . and he’s dead set on destroying all you hold dear and keeping you from experiencing abundant life in Christ. What’s more, his approach to disrupting your life and discrediting your faith isn’t gene...
