Synopsis:
Against Every Warning, She’s Drawn Ever Closer to the Man Known as “Black Heart.”
All of England thinks Major Phillip Camden a monster–a man who deliberately caused the deaths of his squadron. But he would have preferred to die that day with his men rather than be recruited to the Admiralty’s codebreaking division. The threats he receives daily are no great surprise and, in his opinion, well deserved.
As nurse Arabelle Denler observes the so-dubbed “Black Heart,” she sees something far different: a hurting man desperate for mercy. And when their families and paths twist together unexpectedly, she realizes she has a role to play in his healing–and some of her own to do as well.
With Camden’s court-martial looming, an old acquaintance shows up, intent on using him in a plot that sends the codebreakers of Room 40 into a frenzy. With their fragile hopes for the future in the cross hairs, Arabelle and Camden must hold on to hope–and to each other–if they want to survive.
My Rating:
This was such a great read. Not a fan of historical fiction, but this being set in the 1900's made it easy and fun to read. The writing was beautiful. I loved the way they spoke back in England in those times. I setting, the events and the romance were all great. I enjoyed each of the characters as well.

Arabelle Denler is a nurse and she works with those injured from war with the Russians. Arabelle is a bold girl, but she also has her moments of being idiotic. She was a sweet girl with a ton of faith. I loved seeing her encourage and love on people you normally wouldn't love on. She was strong girl, but she did downplay herself most of the time. I didn't like when she called herself ugly continually. It annoyed me. She was hard working and she was very wealthy as well. I enjoyed Arabelle though.

Phillip Camden is a major who is facing some heavy charges for killing his squadron. People call him the Black Heart because he appears to be tough and uncaring. However, Camden is such a sweet guy. He's loving, caring, protective and he is just downright amazing. I loved seeing him battle with his faith as well and begin to truly allow God to work in him.

The romance was absolutely amazing between Arabelle and Camden. They started off as strangers and then grew to know one another through an unfortunate mishap with Arabelle's ex. From there they became friends and grew to love one another. I loved their banter and how quirky they were. You couldn't tell that they had an instant attraction for one another because they played it off as nothing. I totally enjoyed watching them grow in their relationship.

Mrs. Lewis was absolutely the most annoying character for me! She irked me with her letters to Camden, she pissed me off her letter to Arabelle and just ANNOYED me with how gullible she was in letting Diellza "help" her. I felt bad for her once the truth about Camden's squadron came to light, but she still just pissed me off.

Diellza was an interesting character. I didn't care for her storyline at first, but as the story progressed she seemed to have an important part. She was so wishy-washy with her feelings. She was a great spy and assassin though. I'm interested in learning more about her from book one.

Overall, tit was a great read and I can't wait to read the first novel, The Number of Love, since I own it. Would definitely recommend it.
