Synopsis:
Independent and tenacious journalist Vivian DeMarco is back in Walton, Georgia, for one reason--to do her job and get out. When her boss suddenly dies under suspicious circumstances, Vivian's only hope for finding the truth--and the next big story--is small-town law enforcement's lanky poster boy, Deputy Ryan Frost. But the deeper they dig, the more twisted the truth becomes, and Vivian finds herself fighting for not only answers but also her life. False leads, incriminating emails, and someone called The Watcher force Vivian to confront the secret of her past and decide: How much is she willing to risk for the sake of a headline? My Rating:
Let me just start by saying I don't read or tend to care for the suspense genre, so this was truly a pleasant surprise and joy to read. I didn't read the first book, Living Lies, but this book still was easy to get into which was a major plus for me. The writing was well done and the pace was quick. I flew through this without even realizing I did -- that's always a great thing!
Vivian DeMarco is a journalist that stuck back in Walton, Georgia. She wants out, but she has no way as of yet. Her life sucks until the murder of her boss takes her on a search to uncover the "story of the year." Vivian is a strong-willed, stubborn girl. She needs to do everything on her own and her way. Seeing her walls breakdown as the story progressed was interesting. She loves her job and will do anything for a story which often leads to her getting into trouble in some form or fashion.
Deputy Ryan Frost is the "ideal" man any woman wants, however, he is a simple man. He doesn't want a woman that fits societies views. He wants someone that will excite him. Ryan is a family man that holds fast to not wanting to be like his father. However, in holding to that idea, he ends up making his life miserable. He's overprotective with his mother and sister and doesn't give them room to be themselves. Ryan was a lonely man, but he found happiness in the end both familial, relational and career wise.
The romance between Ryan and Vivian was pretty good. I loved how they cared for one another. The romance wasn't rushed which was awesome. There were some scenes with kissing, but nothing too raunchy. I loved that they worked together on the case and grew closer to each other. Seeing them on work hours and after hours was great too.
The faith aspects were less than if this was a Christian contemporary, but the moments of faith talk and references to God flowed easily with the story. I loved that Vivian and Ryan both were believers and made sure to pray.
The whole Watcher case was INSANE! I mean the culprit was someone I did NOT even think about. I think that made for this being such a great romantic suspense novel. I'm a fan of anything FBI or BAU so this was definitely right up my ally. Following the case unfold and finding out how all the other victims were connected to the case of Harold's death was mind blowing.
Overall, this was great read. I'll definitely be picking up the first book, Living Lies, and checking out the third and final book in this trilogy when it comes out, Silent Shadows.
PS - the covers to this trilogy are gorgeous!!!!
