Synopsis:

WOW...this was absolutely amazing. I'm going with a 4.5⭐rating. I absolutely loved this way more than I thought I would. I won't lie...those first 3-5 pages BORED me to death because it was very descriptive and nothing interesting. However, once I got past those pages I was HOOKED! Michael Gryboski has created such a compelling novel that combines religion, politics and journalism. I loved each character and their depth. I loved each interaction and thought of the characters.
Reverend Sammy Milton is the main character, but he has died. He's apparently hated by many people and the Post wanted to get an article on his demise. Scott Addison is put on the job and he learns so much along the way.
Scott Addison is a quiet man that seeks to do his job. I loved how interactive he was with the people he interviewed. He didn't just want surface level answers, he dove deep into conversation with each person. I found that he was a great journalist. He didn't allow how his boss (Michael Phillips) felt to hinder him doing his job. He crafted such an excellent article on Sammy Milton and even learned a lot himself.
Sammy Milton is such a well-rounded person. He may have been a reverend, but he was still human. He tried hard to live by the Word of God without hurting others. If he was wrong, he apologized. If views didn't match his own he tried to find ways to be civil. I enjoyed learning so much about Sammy and his heart from other people. Especially his relationship with his son Wallace -- that was AMAZING! Sammy was a superb guy even after death.
Michael Phillips seemed like a total douche at the beginning. He seemed to have a lot of anger and resentment toward Sammy. He seemed to be ecstatic about his death. However, by the end of this story I felt bad for him. I'm glad that Phillips was able to learn a lot about Sammy from Scott's interviews and articles. He was greatly impacted in a positive way.
Each of the characters -- Beverley, Jabez, Eileen, Johnny, Frank and Wallace -- all had such life changing experiences with Sammy. Yes, their interactions had a bunch of hiccups, but one thing for sure is that Sammy impacted them in different ways. I loved how each character was as transparent in their feelings about Sammy. They may have disagreed and argued with him at some point, but it seemed as if they had more good thoughts on him then anything.
Such a profound novel, definitely recommend it!

Synopsis:
For decades, the Reverend Sammy Milton was a force in American politics.
An outspoken leader of the Religious Right, Milton divided his time between evangelizing the lost and galvanizing conservative voters. His rhetoric was polarizing, his positions were divisive, and he garnered many enemies over the years. When news outlets carried word of his death, many openly expressed joy at his passing.
Scott Addison was a product of his time.
A liberal journalist working in the Nation's Capital, he cared little for religion one way or the other. He held, like so many of his peers, a thoroughly negative opinion of the infamous figure. On the day Milton died, Addison was assigned to write an in-depth story meant to bury the fundamentalist preacher in vitriol. He expected the piece to be an easy one.
However, as he talked with those who knew Milton, both friend and foe alike, Addison's image of the late preacher became more complicated.
Far from a simple assignment, the story would take him to places he never thought possible. My Rating:
