Wednesday Word | Psalm 16: 2, 5 and 8

Good Morning Gems!

Today starts the beginning of Wednesday Word! Every Wednesday I want to really look deep into the Word of God by breaking down a scripture and relating it to life. I think it would be perfect for the middle of the week as a pick-me-up and a bit of an evaluation to get your mind going on how your week has been going and how you want it to go for the remainder of the week.
This first Wednesday Word is focused on Psalm 16: 2, 5 and 8. Though I absolutely enjoy the entirety of Psalm 16, I thought really looking at these three verses for the day would be very inspiring and motivational to all who read this post.

Psalm 16:2, 5, 8 (NKJV)
2 O my soul, you have said to the LORD, "You are my Lord. My goodness is nothing apart from You."
5 O LORD, You are the portion of my inheritance and my cup; You maintain my lot.
8 I have set the LORD always before me; Because He is my right hand I shall not be moved.
Aren't those verses simply beautiful? I don't know about you, but they put a smile on my face, made my heart jump with joy and my soul dance within. All three of these verses just remind me of how good God is and how faithful and true He will forever be to you and I.

Verse 2 really makes me realize something about my life...nothing good in my life comes of my own volition. I mean whether I have a lucky day and find $5 on the floor, if I find an unexpected good deal at a store, if I get a compliment from a random stranger or I have perfect day. All good things, big or small, come from Abba (abba means father in Hebrew & Aramaic). That verse alone really made me see how ungrateful I can be towards God or even how selfish I can be. "My goodness is nothing apart from You." Apart means to be separated by distance or away from. Goodness has many synonyms such as virtue, moral excellence, integrity, honesty, worthiness, honor and many others. The definition itself is the quality of being good. That means that anything good, positive, virtuous, honorable or honest can't be found separate or away from God. That really makes me wonder if I've been virtuous, honest, kind or even if I'm bearing fruit (fruits of the Spirit).

Now, in verse 5 it clearly states that God is "the portion of my inheritance" and that He "maintains my lot." We all know, as believers, that we have an inheritance from God, but we must also realize that He Himself is part of that said inheritance. Many people are infatuated with the idea of an inheritance because it's money that can keep them stable, they get many things of value, but all of that is only earthly. However, God not only gives us a place in heaven, but we also get Him which includes His entire legacy and everlasting stability. Once we accept Christ as our Savior we are automatically accepted into God's family and have a birthright to all that God has. That alone made me excited, but that portion after where it says He maintains my lot blew my mind further. To maintain is to enable something or someone to continue which means He prolongs my life, He preserves all that I am and sustains me. Without God I wouldn't have survived all that I have been through, felt or thought. Would you have lived this long if He hadn't maintained your lot?

Finally we come to verse 8 which reads "I have set the LORD  always before me" and "He is at my right hand I shall not be moved." My God is all I could say. King David knew the secret to being unmovable and that is focusing on God. This verse showed me that I truly need to put God before all things in my life be it family, my fiance, my child, work, my problems and etc. I need to stay focused on God and allow Him to do His work in order for me to be stand strong in my faith and be unshakable.

I tell you, Psalm 16 is definitely one that I recommend you all to read. It's all about the hope we have because of our faith and how God truly preserves us.

Today I encourage you to go out into your day with one thing: Focus on God because He alone will preserve you, give you all the good in the world and sustain you better than any human or your problems.

Let's end with a short prayer:

Heavenly Father, I thank You for each and every person that has read this post today as I know that it was meant for them to come here and receive some encouragement. Father, I ask that You continue to maintain and sustain us. I pray that we all keep our eyes locked on You above any problems, stress or worries that may arise throughout the day. Keep our minds and remind us to rely solely on You. Lord God, we come before You humbly this morning giving You honor and praise. We thank You for all that You've done for us. We love You and are forever grateful for Your faithful, true and everlasting love. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
