Hey Gems!!!
I pray you all had a fantastic weekend and a blessed Sunday. This week I want to talk about being rooted in God. Last week we discussed abiding in Christ through His Word which is essentially the Bible. We know that we need to abide in Christ. Abiding is what sustains and keeps us moving to be more like Christ and be closer to the Father. However, there is still more that we need to do and today we’re going to talk about it!
This week’s verse comes from the book of Psalms. As we know Psalms is full of hymns and prayers that have a poetic feel to them, but are also all heartfelt praise to God. This particular Psalm I choose does not have a particular person as the author of it, but it’s titled Blessings on the Godly. The verse is Psalm 1:3
As usual let’s define some words that will help us understand this verse a bit better:
Here’s my interpretation of this verse once I’ve defined the words I wanted to:
Now, righteous refers to one in right standing with God in which they abide by His Laws (His Word), but this does not mean that you would boast about being righteous. A righteous person is humble in all that they do. With, hopefully, a better understanding let’s see what verse 3 means for us as Christians.
Trees are to be deep rooted in order to survive, stand tall and live in a world with such a harsh environment. The most important of a tree is the roots hidden in the ground. The root system draws up water and nourishment so that the tree may be able to produce leaves and fruit during the various seasons.
A tree that is firmly planted by water will definitely survive because the water will be easy to get to through the root system giving it more than other trees may have access to it. That tree would be considered to have a special privilege being planted so close to the water. Can you picture this tree in the Spring and Summer? How pretty the fruit would look and taste? The abundance of fruit it would have? The pretty leaves in the fall or even how it survives a harsh winter? That water gives it a better chance to live.
Now picture a tree that's planted in the wilderness with no access to water that bears fruit randomly in its wrong time. Those fruit will not be ripe or mature. They will be stuck at their point never having the ability to mature. Compared to tree planted by water, this tree will neve have continual freshness.
Imagine ourselves as this tree planted by a river of water. Not just a regular water, but spiritual rivers with living water. That in and of itself is a blessing! Well, where can you find this living water? Jesus did call Himself the living water in John 4:10-11 (also read Jerimiah 2:13 and 17:13). Jesus is the spiritual water that quenches our spiritual thirst and gives us life. Being rooted in the living water allows us to prosper and fall or become morally wicked. Do you use the living water to refreshed daily?
There is just so much I can say about Psalm 1:3, but let me just give you this so this is not a super long post…

This particular Psalm I choose does not have a particular person as the author of it, but it’s titled Blessings on the Godly. The verse is Psalm 1:3
He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper. That just sounds so poetic and beautiful. The entire Psalm 1 is, in essence, a contrast of the righteous and the wicked. It dives deep into how a righteous should live and how the wicked will perish. It’s seriously a beautiful Psalm and one I personally love to study a ton.
As usual let’s define some words that will help us understand this verse a bit better:
- Planted – Hebrew word shathal meaning to plant or transplant. English definition is to place in the ground so that it can grow; place or fix in a specified position.
- Brings forth – Hebrew word nathan meaning to give, appoint, bestow, be healed or bestow.
- Fruit – Hebrew word peri meaning literal fruit or reward.
- Season – Hebrew word eth meaning appointed time, circumstances or period.
- Wither – Hebrew word nabel meaning to fall away, fail or come to nought. Figuratively to be foolish or morally wicked.
- Prosper – Hebrew word tsalach meaning to push forward, be good, be profitable or come mightily.
Here’s my interpretation of this verse once I’ve defined the words I wanted to:
He shall be placed by the rivers of water that gives its reward at an appointed time, whose leaf shall not fail or fall down; and whatever he does shall be profitable, good and mightily. Now there are definitely other ways this verse can be interpreted, but this is the main idea that I got from this verse. When I first read this verse I wondered why would God compare us to a tree. To truly understand this verse, you need to read the previous two verses. In short they speak about the difference between a righteous person and wicked person. It tells of a righteous person who does not take in evil counsel, partake in the ways of evil or have evil associations. How we, as the righteous, need to be separated from the wicked and keep the Law in our heart. Do you keep the law in your heart?
Now, righteous refers to one in right standing with God in which they abide by His Laws (His Word), but this does not mean that you would boast about being righteous. A righteous person is humble in all that they do. With, hopefully, a better understanding let’s see what verse 3 means for us as Christians.

There is just so much I can say about Psalm 1:3, but let me just give you this so this is not a super long post…
In order for us to be stable in this harsh world, be fruitful and bear fruit that is profitable we must focus continually on obedience to God by first being rooted in Him through His Word. We can be rooted in Him by studying His Word, praying and keeping away from wicked ways and people. Nothing works without having access to a lifeline or support system and with access you must take hold and utilize it.
Apostle Paul said it best in his prayers for the Ephesians and Colossians about being rooted in Christ:
Apostle Paul said it best in his prayers for the Ephesians and Colossians about being rooted in Christ:
That Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love. (Ephesians 3:17)
So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. (Colossians 2:6-7)
Being deeply rooted in God does the following:
- Give you a solid life.
- Give you a healthy life.
- Give you a beautiful life.
- Sustains you.
- Helps you prosper.
- Continual newness
Other verses that can help you understand this verse better are Genesis 1:22, Psalms 46:4, Isaiah 61:3 Matthew 15:13, John 15:5, Galatians 5:22-23 and Philippians 4:17.
Weekly Dare
